Sri Lanka Foreign Service Grade III Open Competitive Examination 2026

The Public Service Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism have announced the Open Competitive Examination for Recruitment to Grade III of the Sri Lanka Foreign Service – 2026.

A total of 25 vacancies are available for eligible candidates. The examination will be conducted by the Commissioner General of Examinations in Colombo in November 2026.

πŸŽ“ Educational Qualifications

Applicants must possess one of the following qualifications:

  • πŸŽ“ A degree from a foreign or state university recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC).
  • πŸŽ“ A degree awarded by a university established by an Act of Parliament of Sri Lanka.
  • πŸŽ“ A degree recognized under Section 25A of the Universities Act, No. 16 of 1978.

Applicants must also be physically and mentally fit to serve in Sri Lanka or any part of the world and perform the duties of the post.

Applicants must:

  • ⭐ Have an excellent character.

⚠️ Important

Applicants with dual citizenship must rescind their foreign nationality if selected for the Sri Lanka Foreign Service and must not acquire citizenship of another country during the period of service.

General Applicants

Applicants must:

  • Be 22 years or older, and
  • Be under 28 years of age on the closing date of applications.

Accordingly, applicants must have been born on or before 06 October 2004 and on or after 06 October 1998.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ’Ό Applicants Already in the Public Service

Candidates already serving in the Public Service must be under 35 years of age on the closing date.

They must also have a satisfactory record of service according to the conditions specified in the Gazette notification.

The applicable salary scale is:

The written examination will be conducted in Sinhala, Tamil and English.

Candidates may apply in one of these three languages and must sit all question papers in the selected language medium. The language medium cannot subsequently be changed.

The PrΓ©cis paper assesses the candidate’s ability to understand a given passage and express its meaning clearly, concisely and attractively.


🧩 MCQ Paper

The MCQ paper contains two sections:

Tests the candidate’s:

2️⃣ General Knowledge & Current Affairs

Tests knowledge of developments in:

The two sections together contain 100 questions and carry 150 marks.

The Language Proficiency paper assesses candidates’ language skills.

Candidates sitting the examination in Sinhala or Tamil must sit for a paper in English.

Candidates sitting the examination in English must sit for a paper in either Sinhala or Tamil.


🎀 Interview for Eligibility Assessment

Candidates must:

  • Sit all seven written papers.
  • Obtain the minimum pass mark in every subject.
  • Obtain an aggregate mark of at least 300, subject to the applicable cut-off.
  • Be among the candidates selected for the interview.

The number called for the interview will not exceed five times the number of vacancies. With 25 vacancies, this means the number called cannot exceed 125 candidates, subject to the other requirements.

The interview carries 100 marks.

🎫 Admission Card

Examination admission cards will be issued online to eligible applicants who submit duly completed applications on or before the closing date.

The Examination Department will notify candidates through a web notification, SMS or other specified method when admission cards are issued.

Candidates must produce their admission card at the examination hall. A candidate who fails to produce the admission card will not be allowed to sit the examination.

Candidates who meet the required qualifications will be referred for the eligibility assessment interview.

The final merit order will be based on the aggregate marks obtained in the written examination and interview.

Results may be communicated personally to candidates or published on the Department of Examinations results website according to the directions of the Public Service Commission.
